SMILE Project (Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood Enhancement)

Project Overview

The SMILE Project is a central government initiative dedicated to the rehabilitation of individuals engaged in begging within municipal limits. Galaxy NGO began implementing this project in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipality in November 2023, with the aim of providing comprehensive support and reintegration opportunities for these marginalized individuals. The project follows a carefully structured approach to ensure that the beneficiaries receive the necessary care and support to transition into a more stable and productive life.

Objectives

Primary Goal: To rehabilitate individuals engaged in begging by providing them with essential support, vocational training, and employment opportunities, ultimately helping them reintegrate into society as self-reliant and productive citizens.

Specific Objectives:

  • Survey & Identification: Accurately identify and map individuals in need within the municipality.
  • Mobilization & Rehabilitation: Encourage participation and provide comprehensive rehabilitation services.
  • Skill Development & Employment: Equip beneficiaries with skills and create employment opportunities to ensure long-term sustainability.

Key Components

Survey

The project begins with a thorough survey to identify individuals engaged in begging within the municipality. This stage involves mapping the areas where begging is prevalent and gathering data on the demographics and specific needs of the target population. The survey is essential in ensuring that the project reaches the right individuals and provides tailored support.

Identification

Following the survey, potential beneficiaries are identified based on specific criteria, including age, health condition, and willingness to participate in the rehabilitation program. This process ensures that the project focuses on individuals who are most in need and who can benefit from the services offered.

Mobilization

Once identified, the individuals are mobilized and encouraged to participate in the SMILE program. This stage includes providing initial counselling, explaining the benefits of the program, and preparing the beneficiaries for the transition from street life to a more structured and supportive environment. The mobilization process is crucial in helping individuals understand the opportunities available to them and in gaining their trust.

Rehabilitation

The final stage of the project involves providing comprehensive rehabilitation services to the beneficiaries. This includes shelter, food, medical care, and psychological support. Additionally, beneficiaries are given access to vocational training and skill development workshops, helping them acquire the skills needed for sustainable employment. The SMILE project rehabilitates approximately 50 individuals per year, helping them reintegrate into society as self-reliant and productive citizens.

Training Programs

The SMILE Project offers various training programs designed to equip beneficiaries with practical skills that can lead to sustainable employment. These programs include workshops on crafts, trades, and other livelihood options, providing beneficiaries with the tools they need to build a better future.

Community Engagement

Community involvement is a key component of the SMILE Project. The initiative includes awareness campaigns, sensitization workshops, and events that promote social inclusion. By involving the community, the project aims to create a supportive environment that fosters the successful reintegration of beneficiaries.

Employment Opportunities

The SMILE Project collaborates with local businesses and organizations to create employment opportunities for rehabilitated individuals. This not only helps beneficiaries earn a livelihood but also boosts their confidence and sense of belonging, paving the way for their successful reintegration into society.
