Outreach and Drop-In Centres (ODIC)

Project Overview

The Outreach and Drop-In Centres (ODIC) project is a central government initiative designed to address substance abuse and provide critical support to those affected by addiction. Implemented by Galaxy NGO since November 2019 in the Thiruvananthapuram district, the ODIC project focuses on creating safe spaces where individuals dealing with drug-related challenges can access essential services and support. Each month, the project serves approximately 100 beneficiaries, offering a range of services to meet both their immediate and long-term needs.

Objectives

Primary Goal: To provide a supportive environment and essential services for individuals struggling with addiction, helping them on the path to recovery and reintegration into society.

Specific Objectives:

  • Immediate Support: Provide safe spaces and basic necessities for individuals in need.
  • Counselling and Care: Offer professional counselling and medical services to address both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction.
  • Community Education: Increase public awareness about substance abuse and available support systems.
  • Long-Term Rehabilitation: Facilitate connections to rehabilitation programs for sustained recovery.

Key Components

Safe Drop-In Centres

The ODIC project operates drop-in centres where beneficiaries can find refuge and receive basic necessities such as food, shelter, and medical care. These centres serve as safe havens for those struggling with addiction, offering them a place to start their journey towards recovery.

Counselling and Support

Professional counselling services are a cornerstone of the ODIC project. These services help individuals understand their addiction, cope with its challenges, and develop strategies for overcoming it. Support groups within the centres also foster a sense of community, allowing beneficiaries to share their experiences and support one another..

Medical Camps

Regular medical camps are organized as part of the ODIC project to provide healthcare services to beneficiaries. These camps offer check-ups, treatment for common ailments, and comprehensive care focusing on both physical and mental well-being. Preventive care and treatment for addiction-related health issues are key components of these medical services.

Community Awareness Programs

The ODIC project places a strong emphasis on educating the community about the dangers of drug abuse, prevention strategies, and available support systems. Through various initiatives, the project aims to reduce the stigma associated with addiction and promote a more informed and supportive community environment.

Rehabilitation Referrals

For beneficiaries requiring long-term care, the ODIC project provides referrals to rehabilitation programs and other support services. This assistance helps individuals transition from immediate support to sustained recovery, giving them the best chance for a successful reintegration into society.
